No, it’s not finished yet

Well, my plan was to finish my haubergeon today. Other things got in the way. For one, I had to work late Friday night – which wasn’t really an impediment, since I left the office early with a late-night deployment in mind, and I managed to get some work done on the haubergeon before I had to log in to the office systems and participate.
Today… ah today… I woke up with a clogged nose and a splitting headache. Took my usual allergy medication, and spent twenty or so minutes blowing out my nose. It didn’t help much. A couple of hours later I took some sinus headache medication. Still no help. My nose just kept running and the post-nasal drip was causing a sore throat and coughing on top of the sinus headache. At least I know it’s not a cold. To top it off, I also had migraine symptoms – seeing auras, flashing highlights whenever I moved my eyes and head.
A nap didn’t help. Finally, six hours after the sinus medication I took some sudafed and tylenol. The congestion’s gone, but the headache remains – although it’s much muted.
I still have to do some work for the office tonight – so I’ll probably get started on that after I finish this post… but I’m not going to have the haubergeon finished until later in the week.
Yesterday morning, I had finished the back.

A little while longer and I had it attached to the yoke. Now I had a maille tabard.

I started looking into how to attach the sleeves. I still haven’t quite got that figured out, but I think I’ll be able to do it. In the meantime, I stitched up the sides.

This morning, I decided I would at least try it on.

So, finally it’s at least wearable, if not completely finished. I’m taking it in to work tomorrow, so I’ll see if I can’t get a better picture or two of me wearing it.
Yes, it is heavy, although it doesn’t seem quite so heavy when I’m wearing it as it does when I’m carrying it about. It weighs very close to 20 pounds.
No, it’s not “armor quality”. For that I would have had to use heavier wire, or have the ring ends riveted or welded. And, of course it’s not “authentic” either. For one, stainless steel wasn’t available to armorcrafters back in the day. And, they typically both forge welded the “closed” rings and riveted the connecting rings.
Materials invested : $105. Labor (at WA State minimum wage) so far: $800. Having my own chainmail shirt that I made myself: priceless.

 | That's fantastic. I sew with fabric, always have, used to make most of my own clothes, designed some for myself. I cannot imagine doing what you have done here. |
