For those we lost, We will not forget 09/11/2001 “Our God given unalienable rights are given to us all as individuals. They tell us what we may do for ourselves, and they are the embodiment of liberty. The so-called rights that government gives to some of us are parcelled out to select groups as classes. They tell us what one class of people may require another to do for them, and they are the very essence of slavery.”

Back on the grid

Yes, I’ve been gone a while. At first it was because things were getting really busy. Then it was because of problems with my computer. After a couple of weeks, I simply got out of the habit, and into other habits. I think I’ll spare myself and you the details, except to say that the computer isn’t quite 100% just yet.

I also haven’t done too much reading online, or paid too much attention to the news. Things still look pretty much the same as they did a month ago – only the details have changed. The general public is still pretty much as clueless as always. Politics is pretty much as messed up as always too. According to yesterday’s poll results from one of the survey sites I occassionally participate on…

Percentage who think it is right for countries to ban individuals for views they hold 44%
Percentage who say empathy should be a key factor in nominating a Supreme Court Justice 54%

More than half of the respondents think that empathy is an important consideration and qualification for Supreme Court Justices? And nearly half think it’s OK to ban people from a country for their ideology? In a country where the freedom of speech is held to be sacred? – Oh, that’s right. I forgot about the “fairness” doctrine and the notion that conservatives are somehow a threat to national security.

The more I look at these things, the more I think that the samples are heavily weighted toward the left. I’ve always believed that respect for the law and the Constitution should be a key factor in nominating a Supreme Court Justice. Empathy is what got us to the point where the Constitution is little more than a piece of paper with archaic language written on it.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. I can be gone for almost a month and it looks like the country didn’t go to Hell in a hand basket, but at the same time, it looks like little has improved either. Well, my 0.000000083% influence (based on my average daily readership vs. the U.S. population) wasn’t likely to change much anyway.

I think I’ll go read the news.

It seems to be slowing down. At least they have stopped giving into every whim of the ONE. Some are starting to question. Is this a positive sign or simply a rest period?

The big deal that needs to be worked on hard is the Pedophile Protection Act also known as HR 1913. Our leaders are tearing at the moral fibers that hold society together.

That's about it.

The BHO/Dem Congress steamroller is still on the move, though lots of the bills are in committee now.

Next big push....National health care.

Welcome back! :-)

"The more I look at these things, the more I think that the samples are heavily weighted toward the left."

Maybe. But perhaps it's the growing enstupiation of the American people, too.

About those compy woes: software or hardware?

Software.

Somehow my machine was infected with a rootkit. After trying for a week to clean it, I ended up wiping it, and re-installing everything. Wiping it took 20 minutes. Re-installing everything is not quite complete.

Carbonite turned out to be a very nice thing to have. Unfortunately my backup wasn't quite as "complete" as I thought, and I lost a few hundred photos (out of a few tens of thousands). I didn't lose any of my email though. Carbonite had a complete backup of that. I'll be putting what photos I have onto a few DVDs for offline storage in the next couple of days.

I know. This probably wouldn't have happened if I had been running Linux. I'm still not ready to take that plunge just yet though.

Perri,

If you reinstalled on a new hard drive, you'd be in good shape to run recovery software on the fragged hard drive. Some of the free Windows utilities are pretty good at recovering data, and some even specialize in image (as in graphics files :-)) recovery. http://www.pcinspector.de has a couple that might even allow you to recover some of your files even with a reinstallation over the hard drive.

Hi Perry,

I wouldn't doubt those numbers are skewed to the left. Who else believes the Constitution is a living document? It accounts for both questions. As far as the "empathy" question, I linked to four articles by Thomas Sowell on the issue at the team blog of which I'm a part, "AmericanDescent". Comments show some on the left just don't get it. As Sowell points out in anecdotes involving OW Holmes, a good justice puts all empathy aside and judges on the merits of the case as they align (or not align) with the Constitution, and that's whether or not the justice personally agrees or not.

But of course it's not a push toward anything remotely looking like fascism, now is it?

I had to start over with my computer. After the virus a week ago, my computer was still having various problems and lock ups.

I am back on and running much faster.

Glad you're back.
Any good opportunities for an old airplane hydraulics guy in your neck of the woods?
