Finally, I can vote for John McCain in good conscience
Published Fri, Aug 29 2008 9:49 AM
John McCain has finally made his Vice Presidential pick. He chose the governor from Alaska, Sara Palin. She's a conservative, and she's a political reformer. And naturally, the left has already started to look for dirt. According to the Associated Press…
More recently, she has come under the scrutiny of an investigation by the Republican-controlled legislature into the possibility that she ordered the dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner because he would not fire her former brother-in-law as a state trooper.
If that's the worst they find I'm not worried. It would have been worse if she ordered the dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner because he would not hire her former brother-in-law. Anyway, we'll be hearing more about this from the left soon.
One of the things I like about her is that she's willing to do what it takes to reform not just government, but her own party. She ousted a governor during the Republican Primary to get elected. She's also willing to take on Congress, rejecting Ted Steven's pet project.
“Thanks, but no thanks on that bridge to nowhere”
— Alaska Governor Sara Palin, accepting the Vice Presidential Nomination
[Update: It seems quite natural that the “Republican-controled legislature” in Alaska would be investigating Mrs. Palin — after all, according to the Wall Street Journal…
[S]he took on not only a sitting governor from her own party but also Alaska's Republican establishment -- vowing to clean up a political system that had been rocked by an Federal Bureau of Investigation corruption probe.
After handily winning, her popularity in Alaska soared as she went on to sack political appointees with close ties to industry lobbyists and shelved pork projects.
Now that's what I call a reformer!]
The problem of setting limits on government seems to be similar to herding cats. As soon as you get one cat going in the direction you want, two or three others take off in a completely different direction. With government it's much the same. As soon as you reign in one bureaucratic department, two or three others expand their reach.
I noted in a recent post that laws are made to restrict behavior. Laws made to restrict the behavior of the government are particularly difficult to craft successfully. Government intrudes in our lives in so many ways that establishing restrictions on its reach would be a never ending process. Once you managed to restrict its reach in one direction you'll find that it's extending its reach in two or three new ones.
This is what I like about the tenth amendment…
Amendment X
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
That's the way to restrict a government — tell it what it can do and prohibit it from doing anything else. Now if only we can convince our Legislators, our Presidential candidates, and our Courts to abide by that amendment.

Try to get a fair hearing for the tenth amendment in Congress... you can sing about it all you want, but those cows won't come home.
Sarah Palin looks better than Juan Mexicain, even though I have yet to run down her position in alien invaders, and her gullibility in the face of The Church of Anthropogenic Global Warming is disappointing. Still, on many, many other issues she's as good as or better than Juan Mexicain, and, as I said in my brief post on the matter, were Juan to stroke out on January 21, I'd not feel uncomfortable having Palin step in--at least from what info I've been able to gather so far. |
Perri Nelson responded with: Singing and cows
 | I've got to keep singing, and I refuse to give up. I believe in the concept of limited government and personal liberty. I believe in the Constitution and its amendments, even if I'm not fond of a few of the later ones. If I and others stop singing, then we might as well give up and join the socialists on the other side. Eventually, the people will awaken. Eventually, we will vote for people that will restore our liberties and return our government to sanity. That is, these things will happen if we keep trying to educate the people, and if we keep speaking out. I know it can work. We stopped “shamnesty” by speaking out en masse, and conservative voices were heard in the McCain camp as evidenced by his recent pick. The battle may be long, and the odds may be against us, but we will win it, if we don't give up. |
Angel responded with:
 | I agree with David on this one but the ticket is looking a whole lot better eh!:) |
Perri Nelson responded with:
 | So then, we are just to accept the continual erosion of our Constitution and the continued expansion of our government quietly? There's no hope at all to restore what ought to be?
What a depressing thought. |
David responded with:
 | Oh, no; keep singing. :-) Just keep yourself aware that Congress won't listen... at least not until a passle of 'em are thrown out on their ears and shunned forever after.
(I recall a conversation with Tom Eagleton some *mumble-mumble* years ago where I pointed out the then "vast chasm" between what he presented as "political reality" and, urm, real reality. Typically--for a politician--he refused to allow the difference.) |
Perri Nelson responded with:
 | Just keep yourself aware that Congress won't listen... at least not until a passle of 'em are thrown out on their ears and shunned forever after. Oh, I am well aware that that's what it will take — “throwing the bums out” is one of my fondest wishes. This is why I ask the questions I do, write the things I write, and whenever someone complains to me about how our government is being run, why I ask them who they voted for, and why, and then tell them why they should vote differently next time. I don't plan to give up. |
Layla responded with:
 | My hope is renewed in our system. I hope it will not let us down yet another time.
I prefer to be hopeful instead of negative - their is too much negativity as it goes. |
Stanford Matthews responded with:
 | C'mon admit it, you guys are starting to get comfortable with the GOP ticket. I just stopped at Texas Fred's and after stating a preference for a third whatever or write-in he seems to be favoring the McCain/Palin ticket. I don't expect anyone to get all mushy over McCain/Palin but I was supporting McCain since the race was reduced to the usual two choices, from far left liberal to part-time conservative. Better a maybe than a no way it can work liberal. Have a nice weekend y'all |
David responded with:
 | Stanford, if "comfortable with the GOP ticket" were predicated upon comfort with Juan Mexicain, then I'd be closer to abstaining on a vote for president than anything else. The fact that someone with the apparent character, grit and intelligence of Palin is slotted in at "a heartbeat away from the presidency" coupled with Juan's age and past health issues at least gives me a kind of mrbid hope for change. *heh*
And heck, Juan's been shown to be swayable by good looking (not to say intelligent to boot) women in the past, so maybe Palin can help rein his destructive policy positions in a bit.
Heck, I even know a guy who served in Vietnam at the same time (and in the same service branch) as Juan Mexicain who hates his very guts, the air he breathes and the ground he walks on who's now openly stated he plans on voting for PALIN in November.
"[C]omfortable with the GOP ticket"? Now that a little sanity and conservatism have finally been introduced, sure. I just wish that since Juan Mexicain apparently HAS to be on the ticket that he were the one carrying a "warm bucket of [spit]". |
