It's worse than I thought.

I heard on Sunday that Senator Kennedy had suffered a seizure that hospitalized him. Now it turns out to be cancer. Much as I don't like him, I still think it's a hard thing to have to fight through, even harder when it's cancer. The Senator may only have a year to live...
BOSTON —
Sen. Edward M. Kennedy was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor Tuesday in what could be the grim final chapter in a life marked by exhilarating triumph and shattering tragedy. Some experts gave the liberal lion less than a year to live.
Doctors discovered the tumor after the 76-year-old senator and sole surviving son of America's most storied political family suffered a seizure over the weekend. The diagnosis cast a pall over Capitol Hill, where the Massachusetts Democrat has served since 1962, and came as a shock to a family all too accustomed to sudden, calamitous news.
...
Kennedy, the Senate's second-longest serving member, was re-elected in 2006 and is not up for election again until 2012. Were he to resign or die in office, state law requires a special election for the seat 145 to 160 days afterward.
...
Malignant gliomas are diagnosed in about 9,000 Americans a year. In general, half of all patients die within a year.
"It's treatable but not curable. You can put it into remission for a while but it's not a curable tumor," said Dr. Suriya Jeyapalan, a neuroncologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.
...
A high point in his life came in 1980, when Kennedy challenged Jimmy Carter for the Democratic presidential nomination. He eventually bowed out with a stirring speech in which he declared, "The cause endures, the hope still lives and the dream shall never die." His eulogy for his brother Robert was equally stirring.
The low point was 1969, when Kennedy drove a car off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island on Martha's Vineyard. The accident killed aide Mary Jo Kopechne. Kennedy at the time was married to his first wife, Joan, whom he later divorced. The tragedy may well have cost him the presidency.

For that particular gaffe, Edward M. Kennedy will always be remembered by me as the Senator from Chappaquiddick. I hate the man's politics, and I always have.
Even so, I wish him and his family well. Here's hoping that the doctors can treat his cancer and send it into an extended remission. Some things must transcend politics.

 | Would Kennedy's cancer treatment be allowed by the British Health System?
Given his age and advanced cancer, I'll bet the socialized medicine machine certainly would not have paid for that $10000 helicopter ride that Mr. Kennedy got from his private island paradise.
Also, Ted Kennedy is going to have to answer for Mary Jo Kopechne.
Let's let Ted go over to Great Britain to have the doctors at the National Health Service treat his cancer.
Of course, I would think that he'd be denied cancer therapy as Ann Marie Rogers (a breast cancer patient) was denied an anticancer drug by the British court. Too bad she was not allowed to buy private health insurance by the socialized medicine folks in England.
Sorry, Ted, no cancer treatment for you. Health care rationing, you know. |
Perri Nelson responded with:
 | Ah.. but you see, under socialized health care systems, some people are still more equal than others. He would probably not be denied health care under the British system simply because he's a high-profile politician. Remember, in Animal Farm, even though the mantra was "Four legs good, two legs bad" the pigs eventually started walking on two legs.
Despite the socialist agenda of the left, we still have private medicine in this country. Senator Kennedy will get the best care money, whether it's his own money or his constituent's money, can buy. I wouldn't stand in the way of that for anyone regardless of their politics, having recently lost a close family friend to cancer.
As for having to answer for Mary Jo Kopechne, you're right. He will have to answer for it. But not to me, or to the state. He's (Sen. Kennedy) gotten away for it as far as temporal authorities are concerned, for better or worse. There is a higher power, and I trust His judgement more than my own or yours.
As far as it goes, we can all hope for justice for Mary Jo Kopechne, but remember if all we ever receive is justice then Hell will overflow and Heaven will be sparsely populated indeed. Thank God for mercy too, and leave judgement to Him.
I wish ill upon no-one, not even my worst political foe. |
Perri Nelson responded with:
 | By the way, "Roy". I do require a REAL email address. Yours is obviously fictitious and is a violation of my commenting policy. I let your comment stand, because I felt it needed answering.
I won't do so in the future. |
Marge responded with:
 | Perri, why do you require a REAL email address? Gonna REPORT us to somebody? Are you the big pig of your own "Animal Farm"? Don't try to "big brother" us?
By the way, your "worst political foe", ie. a Stalinist type, would drop you in a heartbeat! You don't have to take the high road always, you know. Enemies, true savage enemies, are better vanquished, like splatting a bug. But, mercy is always reserved for the weak or innocent. |
Perri Nelson responded with:
 | Marge,
It's simple really. I stand behind my opinions with my real identity. I don't allow anonymous commenting and expect everyone that comments here to stand behind their own opinions. If you read my comment policy you will see that. Also, I require the real email address so that I can contact you regarding your comments if I wish. That's also spelled out in my policies.

As for being the big pig of my own "Animal Farm", you are exactly correct. I own this site. I pay money to have it hosted. I developed the software on which it runs. It's my site, specificially created for the dissemination of my opinions.
I am sure that you have seen it on other weblogs and it applies here: You don’t have First Amendment rights on any blog, other than your own. If you don't like my policy on comments, feel free to start your own weblog and establish your own policy.
As for taking the high road, it's preferable to stooping to the level of your opponents. Haven't you noticed how foul the treatment of conservatives is on leftist websites? Do you honestly believe that by spreading hatred of individuals that we're helping to defeat their ideas? When conservatives stoop to that level it just adds fuel to the liberal fires and bolsters their argument that conservatives are mean-spirited.
As a Christian, I'm called upon to turn the other cheek, to love my neighbor as myself, and even to love my enemies. I'm called upon to hate the sin, but love the sinner. In other words, to take the high road when I can.
As a conservative, I believe that it's ideas that matter. Attacking the person doesn't win the argument, attacking the ideas does. Senator Kennedy's policies are horrible. I'd rather condemn the policies than the man. I'll leave it up to someone who can see through to the true motivation of a man's heart to pass judgement. |
