What are they up to?

That's a question that comes to mind whenever I think of Congress. To that end, I'm considering adding a few resources pages to the site. In order to get there, I'm going to have to do a bit of research as to how much of what they're actually doing is available online, and in what formats.
In the meantime though, I've added a new feature to the sidebar called “The Hill Blog.” This small section in the sidebar will show the titles of the latest postings on The Hill Blog. This is The Hill's Congress Blog, “Where lawmakers come to blog,” and it is a provided by The Hill, self-described as “a congressional newspaper that publishes daily when Congress is in session, with a special focus on business and lobbying, political campaigns and goings on on Capitol Hill.”
Basically, I grab their RSS feed and do a little formatting. I cache it for ten minutes so the page will load a bit faster. It should be in the sidebar for just about all of the main blog pages here, so you can see what Congress is blogging about. If one of the headlines catches your attention, click on it and read the posting. They allow readers to comment on the posts, so maybe you can give your legislators a piece of your mind when they post something you agree with or disagree with. Regarding comments, this is what they have to say.
The Hill’s Congress Blog has been built as a forum for elected government officials, staff and selected policy experts to exchange ideas. The Hill welcomes posts from anyone and will almost always publish it whether it is favorable or critical, as long as it is substantive and advances debate.
So, if you want to give feedback, you know what to do. Just keep it substantive and advance the debate.

[Update: I've also modified my personal blogroll a bit. Appearing just under “The Hill Blog” is a section called, appropriately enough “My Blogroll.” In this section you will find a link to the most recent post from each of my favorite blogs. Once again, this is implemented through the magic of RSS and a little bit of formatting. I hope you like this one! I know I do.]
[Yet another update: I decided to put my blog roll above “The Hill Blog.” I doubt that this will cause any confusion, but I just didn't want you to think I didn't know “up” from “down” or worse, “left” from “right.”]

 | I often can't tell up from down, but left from right hasn't seemed to be much problem, yet, despite the fact that our congresscritters seem to have some difficulty with that one.

As to what Congress is up to, the anwser is more and more, "No good at all, at all." *sigh* |

 | I definitely know my left from my right (thanks to my drill instructors), but I too have problems differentiating up from down. Now let me add that if we are tired of business as usual in Congress, one solution would be to insist that our governors and state legislators reclaim their sovereignty rights under the Tenth Amendment.

The Hill Blog is a good addition, particularly for providing a chance for the average joe to chime in and let them know our thoughts. Every avenue to the ears (and brains) of these guys is a good thing. |
