I hear a lot of young people today expressing the need to change the world. When I was young I wanted to change the world, and I knew a lot of people that wanted to do it too. I read about journalists getting into the profession so they can change the world.
I have to wonder about that. If my generation changed the world, and the younger generation wants to change the world, how do they want to change it and why? Do they want to change it back? Did we not change it far enough? Did my generation screw it up? Do they want to screw it up?
Maybe it's just the age-old conflict between youth and ignorant idealism vs. age and "the system". Still, it seems to me that yesterday's progressives and today's progressives are all progressing in the same direction.
The problems we faced when I was younger are exactly the same as the problems we face today. "The beards have all grown longer overnight." The names on the bumper stickers have changed, but the themes haven't. Heck, some of the bumper stickers haven't changed in all that time.
"Free Tibet" says the bumper sticker on the car of a friend of mine. From what? And how does a bumper sticker like that help? Or is it just another spam offer? "Free Tibet. Get your's now!"
But seriously, how does buying a bumper sticker and displaying it on your car here help to free Tibet from Chinese rule? How likely is it that the Chinese communist party leaders are going to see that bumper sticker? And if they do, how likely is it to move them?
Forty years of "progressives" and there hasn't been much "progress". Maybe that's because a lot of the support for the progressive movement is really just an illusion.
Trust me. That's a good thing.

 | No, the bumper stickers won't do anything except make them 'feel' better and prove to their 'peers' that he is more 'compassionate' as he drives off in his asian made car!
He could pick up the phone, try to reach someone-anyone-in the gov't who could set him up with an interview with someone in Tibet, make arrangements to 'meet' in their country, take a message from the Dalai Lama, and do all he could to help overthrow the grip of communism from their history.
That is my pipedream. :)
Actually, mine is much larger. So large it would not fit on a bumber sticker, at least I don't think so. How about outlaw communism, tyranny, and the UN! Yeah! (And kick egypt out of sudan along with their janjaweed.) |
