Thirteen Things about BlogShares
- "BlogShares is a fantasy stock market for weblogs. Players get to invest a fictional $500, and blogs are valued by incoming links." Each blog is initially valued at $1,000.00, and it's outgoing links at $1,100.00 divided by the number of outgoing links, so some incoming links are worth more than others. Only links to and from other blogs in the index count.
- At the present moment, there are 229 BlogShares trillionaires.
- The wealthiest player in the game is AXA with B$293,034,475,188,657.00
- There are 2226 ranked players using the composite ranking system. I'm ranked #69 (at the moment, rankings are updated every three hours).
- BlogShares maintains the largest hand-edited index of blogs on the Internet (or so I'm told).
- Players gain Karma by voting blogs into "Industries". This is one how blogs are categorized in the index.
- There are over 6,000 industries or categories managed in the BlogShares index.
- Players gain Sigma by adding blogs to the index, reporting title changes, or reporting blogs as "dead".
- For the purposes of the BlogShares index, "dead blogs are those which have had no new posts in the last six months, return a server error or 404, or which have been pronounced dead, moved, or discontinued by blog's owner." "Private" or friends-only blog, are also considered "dead".
- At the time of this posting, there are 6,754,081 blogs in the BlogShares index.
- You can be a free member of BlogShares just by registering. Free members are limited to 20 shares transactions per day.
- You can be a premium member for $15.00 per year, or $2.95 a month. Premium members have lots of advantages over non-premium members, including unlimited daily transactions.
- BlogShares is probably the most addicting Internet game I have ever played.
