For those we lost, We will not forget 09/11/2001 “The task of statesmanship has always been the re-definition of these rights in terms of a changing and growing social order.”
— Franklin D. Roosevelt (Commonwealth Club Address, 1932)

“Roosevelt was wrong! The principles laid down in the Declaration of Independence are the principles of individual liberty. Our unalienable rights, given to us by God are given to us as individuals. Our rights do not come from society or the government, and they cannot be redefined by politicians. The nature of these rights carries with it the implication of individual responsibility, without which we surrender them.”

Eleven Score and Eleven Years Ago...

Two hundred and thirty one years ago today fifty-six men pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to proclaim that liberty and independence were the right of free men everywhere. We celebrate the fourth of July as Independence Day. Many consider it to be the birth of our nation, yet it was actually the birth of thirteen separate and individual nations.

This was not an insignificant event. The colonial rebels had been fighting a losing war (some might call it a police action on the part of the British) against the British for some time, yet the Continental Congress took the time to set down on paper the reasons for the rebellion and to declare themselves free of the British Crown.

None of the philosophies expressed in the Declaration of Independence were exactly new. That doesn't change the profound importance of what Thomas Jefferson expressed in the document.

  • All men are created equal.
  • The rights of mankind are given to us by God, not by governments, nor by other men.
  • Among the rights granted to us by God are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
  • Governments are established by men to secure our rights.
  • It is the right of the people to abolish any government that usurps the rights of mankind.
  • Throwing off the shackles of a long established government is not done lightly, yet there are times when it must be done.

On Independence day we celebrate our freedom and liberty. We should give thought to what freedom and liberty truly mean, and at what cost they are obtained. We should give thought to how our government secures our freedom and liberty and ensures our rights.

We should be grateful to God for giving us our rights and for granting to the founders of our nation the wisdom to establish a government that protects our liberties. Ours is a government that has served as a model for other nations.

We should be thankful for the men and women that died to purchase our liberty, and for the ones that fight and die to keep it safe. Our liberty was purchased with blood.

While we enjoy the fireworks and our barbeque, we should remember that.
