For those we lost, We will not forget 09/11/2001 I consistently believe that when it comes to whether it's Native Americans or African-American issues or reparations, the most important thing for the U.S. government to do is not just offer words, but offer deeds.”

Let's read it before we say anything else about it shall we?

Karl over at Leaning Straight Up reposts a long criticism by Sister Toldjah of the debate over the comprehensive immigration reform bill. He also adds to the criticism.

Before saying anything else one way or the other, or listening to yet another pundit from either side, I think it's time to read the full text of the bill, from the official source. Source documents usually do a lot to eliminate confusion.

This is a huge document. Some have called it amnesty, and I must confess that I've listened to them. Others have done economic impact analyses and spoken out against it. Myself, I'm disinclined to support it simply based upon the sheer size of the thing, but I'm going to read the whole thing with an open mind before I say another word about it.

I'm NOT going to stop commenting on the things politicians say about each other though. Nor am I going to stop believing that illegal immigration is bad for our country and citizenry. I have firm opinions in those areas.

Nevertheless, I pride myself on having informed opinions. My opinions on this bill have been influenced primarily by what I've heard on talk radio, and on the news, but that's not good enough anymore. With the source material in front of me I will be able to once again have an informed opinion.

I've included five copies of the link to the bill's full text up to this point in this article. For anyone that STILL can't find it, look here: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c110:S.1348:

Hiya Perri!..sorry my friend I have read and heard enough people discussing it to know a sham when I see one!..argg! :)

Perri Nelson responded with:

Well, I don't know until I've read it. Have your read what Karl and Sister Toldjah have to say?

So far I've read up to section 401. I'm just getting started on that part now. That's the first section of "TITLE IV--NONIMMIGRANT AND IMMIGRANT VISA REFORM Subtitle A--Temporary Guest Workers".

Very little of what I've read so far seems objectionable, but it's pretty complex. In order to fully understand it, you have to reference Aliens and Nationality - 8 USC Title 8 starting with section 1101 and onward as well as Crimes and Criminal Procedure - 18 USC Title 18 since large parts of the bill say things like
Section 222(g) (8 U.S.C. 1202(g)) is amended--

  (1) in paragraph (1)--

    (A) by striking `Attorney General' and inserting `Secretary of Homeland Security'; and

    (B) by inserting `and any other nonimmigrant visa issued by the United States that is in the possession of the alien' after `such visa'; and

So you have to go to 8 USC 1202(g) to see what the heck they're talking about.

I'm fairly certain that there's a lot of stuff in this bill that's not good, but I'm also fairly certain now that I've read it to this point that there's a lot of stuff that is good. I'm less than a third of the way through it so far, and I've found mischaracterizations (I won't say outright lies just yet) of its content by both the left and the right.

Reading the bill, together with related laws, has made it a whole lot easier to understand a few of the truly insane-appearing things that have happened with regard to illegal immigration over the years.

I'll reserve judgement until I've read the whole thing and taken the time to understand it.

Perri Nelson responded with:

I've finished my first reading. This is clearly an amnesty bill, words to the contrary by anyone notwithstanding.

Maggie M. Thornton responded with: Amnesty

Hi Perri, I read the first go-round of this thing - of course, it has changed, and from what I'm reading, changed against last night.

The administration wants us to believe that this is NOT amnesty because there are consequences, it's not a free pass. The thing is, the consequences are ridiculously un-consequential, and the border will continue to be encroached.

Our border guards are not even allowed to protect our border, for gosh sakes! Bio-metric cards - please. They can't even keep track of our social security cards, and then even when they know our i.d. has been stolen, the SSA won't touch it. To solve the stolen i.d. problem, means the illegals cannot work.

It is strange to feel a fear of our government, but that's where I am. Thanks for taking the time to read this and offer up your opinion. I'll follow one of your links.
