Vista shmista - Gimme back XP!

There's an interesting, if brief article on Dell Computers, Microsoft Windows Vista, and Microsoft Windows XP on Techdirt.

Not only is Vista not leading to higher computer sales, but there's a significant subset of consumers that actually would prefer to buy an older version of Windows. This demand has prompted Dell to start selling a few PC models preloaded with Windows XP, which the company had discontinued earlier this year.

...

But with so many complaints about the resource demands of the operating system, and the amount of crapware that it comes bundled with, it's no surprise that many people are happy to go with the old system.

I love that term. "Crapware". That pretty much defines how I feel about Vista after my recent upgrade.

After speaking with hundreds of customers using Vista, the over-all consensus is: Yep, it's NOT ready for the masses...

David responded with:

Vista? Lots of eye candy. Some structural changes, but as always with Me$$y$oft, the first year release is all shrinkwrap beta and all early adopters are simply late term beta testers for Me$$y$oft.

SERIOUS security holes and incompatibilities discovered weekly? Not mature technology.

And hardware/spftware incompatibilities added to massive hardware demands (in order to get the "gee whiz" features Me$$y$oft touts)? Nope. Not in my upgrade recomendations at this time. Oh, I may have to build a Vista box and install the thing just so I can support those who've been suckered, but that'd be it, and I think I'd sequester it on its own subnet... *heh*

David responded with:

Oh, BTW, I had juuuust sent that Dell info to a client earlier today. The (very small) company--a dental office with two locations (VPN'ed together)--company's considering some computer purchases but concerned about Vista (from feedback in the community--*heh*). Looking at some Dells and definitely wanting XP rather than Vista (heck, M$ is supporting XP throiugh 2014, beyond the probable lifespan of tghe computers they envision purchasing). And BTW #2: the survey of users that persuaded Dell to continue offering XP had ten times as many respondents requesting machines coming preloaded with... Linux. *LOL*
