For those we lost, We will not forget 09/11/2001 “The task of statesmanship has always been the re-definition of these rights in terms of a changing and growing social order.”
— Franklin D. Roosevelt (Commonwealth Club Address, 1932)

“Roosevelt was wrong! The principles laid down in the Declaration of Independence are the principles of individual liberty. Our unalienable rights, given to us by God are given to us as individuals. Our rights do not come from society or the government, and they cannot be redefined by politicians. The nature of these rights carries with it the implication of individual responsibility, without which we surrender them.”

News bites and open trackbacks

Bad news or good news for Global Warming zealots: New technologies have been developed to bring old oil wells back to life. That means more fossil fuels to burn for a lot longer.  The Kern River field in California which saw declines to 10,000 barrels per day in production is now producing 85,000 barrels per day.

In Texas, they're injecting that evil gas - Carbon Dioxide - into the ground to double oil production. Maybe that'll help to offset the burning of all that fossil fuel.

Personally, I think it's a good thing that we're going to get more oil out of old wells. After all, the anti-capitalists have done just about everything they can to stop us from opening new wells, so we might as well keep the old ones active as long as we can.

In any case, whether we pump out more from what were once thought to be dry holes, or buy more from foreigners, we're still going to be using oil for a long time.

China has increased it's military spending, with it's biggest increase in the last 5 years announced on Sunday. With their recent arsenal buildupposturing in the Pacific, their support for North Korea's Nuclear program, and with their anti-satellite missiles tested in January this could be an alarming trend.

Congress decided to trigger a mini-Y2K scare this year in the name of "saving energy". They decided to move the beginning of Daylight Saving Time up several weeks, and to move the end of it back several weeks. We turn our clocks forward at 2:00AM on Sunday, March 11.

It is true that Daylight Saving Time does actually save a tiny amount of energy. More in the summertime than in the winter, but there is a measurable energy savings of about 1% per day. When you consider the enormous amount of energy we use, that 1% can amount to quite a bit. Not that you're likely to see it in your utility bills.

Congress has reserved the right to repeal the changes after 2007, depending on how much energy is actually saved. I wonder if the amount of energy saved will compensate for the extra grief technology managers and software developers will go through.

For me it's not such a big deal, at least on this website. I needed to update the time tracking code to make sure that post times still reflect the actual time of posting when Daylight Saving Time goes into effect. As long as I'm at it, I might as well spend the extra time to get it right and make it a configuration change rather than a coding change if Congress decides to legislate another change in reality next year.
