Visual Studio 2005 and Windows Vista

After giving me much grief, I have finally (four days later) managed to get my system to reboot almost normally. I tried every combination of reboot imaginable, tried repairing the system, tried using system restore, nothing worked.
Occasionally, the system "almost" made it all the way through a reboot, to the point where it would hang when logging in. Finally, I got it to reboot, with driver signature verification turned off.
I'm not entirely happy about this, but it does indicate that there's some chance I may be able to recover my system to a usable state. I'm thinking about getting another hard drive to deal with the backup issues I encountered this time.
In any case, now that the system is up again, I am going to "continue" the upgrade process. First, I'm going to re-install the Visual Studio 2005 service pack 1. Once I'm certain that it's installed correctly, I'll install the Vista update for service pack 1.
Then, in theory everything should be supported, except for SQL Server 2000 and Visual Studio 2003. Those two products have been working all along though, so I may be back to a stable state.
I'm going to be running incremental backups on a nightly basis though. I really don't want to go through this exercise again.
Once I'm back in business, I'll upgrade the source code and test environment for the web site. When I'm sure it's working, I'll probably have a few hours of downtime on the web site as it gets moved to a .NET 2.0 capable server.

Well, it's still not fixed. I was able to uninstall a bunch of incompatible software, and I was able to successfully install service pack 1 on top of Visual Studio 2005, but I'm back to the point of not being able to boot except into "safe" mode.
I do think that I'll eventually get this worked out, but the system seems to die at random points. I'm beginning to hate Vista with a passion.
