I know it's been out for quite a while now, but I finally broke down and bought a personal copy of Visual Studio 2005 Professional. I've been using it at work for over a year, and I like it a lot. I'm currently running the install on my main computer at home.
Once I've got it up and running, I'm going to convert the website code from ASP.NET 1.1 to ASP.NET 2.0. ASP.NET 2.0 has a lot of built-in features that I'd like to use. Among them, master pages, personalization and better support for XHTML out of the box.
In fact, the .NET framework version 2.0 has a few features I like, like partial classes and generic classes. Sure, none of this is really new. But it does open up the opportunity for me to do a lot of new things with the web site. Especially once I get it converted.
The package also comes with a developer edition of SQL Server 2005. Again, not spectacularly new, but some of the features there are pretty interesting too.
So I have lots of new toys to explore. Hopefully I'll be inspired to make some of the improvements to the site I've wanted to make for a while now.
