A longtime Senator shows the others the way

Mississippi Senator Trent Lott is resigning by the end of the year. While the Republican party is likely to suffer because it will be losing a leader, I applaud Senator Lott's decision.

JACKSON, Miss. — Sen. Trent Lott of Mississippi, the Senate's No. 2 Republican, plans to resign his seat by the end of the year, congressional and Bush administration officials said Monday.

No reason was given. Congressional officials say that his health is fine. He's seeking "other opportunities".

Lott becomes the sixth Senate Republican this year to announce retirement. Democrats hold a 51-49 majority in the chamber.

He's also showing other Senators from both parties the way! He's leaving, not in disgrace, but at a time of his choosing. It sure beats being hounded out of office because of impropriety and scandal. It also beats being not being hounded out of  office despite impropriety and scandal.

Thanks to the 17th amendment to our Constitution, Senators are elected by the people rather than the state legislatures. Because they are elected by the people rather than the legislatures they are answerable to the people directly rather than the states that the Senate was intended to represent. Rather than standing up for states rights and federalism, they typically stand for socialism and pork-barrel spending in bids to curry favor with the electorate, weakening the role of the states in our government and supporting a more massive federal bureaucracy.

Senators are elected to six year terms. Unlike the President they are not term-limited. By resigning less than half-way through his fourth term he's effectively term-limiting himself. While Senator Lott has been an effective leader for the Republican party, he's stepping down, paving the way for fresh ideas.

Now if only some other Senators would follow his wisdom — say perhaps the senior Senator from Massachusetts?
