Old Glory

‘Old Glory’ is a name for our flag coined by Captain William Driver in 1831. You can read about it at USFlag.org.

Captain Driver's grave is located in the old Nashville City Cemetery, and is one of three (3) places authorized by act of Congress where the Flag of the United States may be flown 24 hours a day.

Our nation's flag means a lot to me. It's a symbol of freedom. It's a symbol of strength. It's a symbol of the sacrifices brave men and women made over the last 230+ years that have given us this "greatest nation on God's green earth."

Oh say does that star spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

It angers me when I see people burning our flag as an expression of free "speech". It angers me when I see it flown upside down as a sign of protest against our nation's policies. It angers me when I see it flow beneath a Mexican flag in our own country, or when I see any other flag flown higher than it, except for a church pennant. It infuriates me to see swastika's and other desecrations written on it by protesters.

Our flag deserves to be treated with respect, like a living thing and a representative of our country.

Once, for a few brief months we all flew our flags proudly. The time after the cowardly, dastardly attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon had us all displaying the flag on our homes, our cars, and our trucks. Now, just a few short years later most of those flags are gone again, only trotted out on holidays like Flag Day and Independence day. It's sad.

Much was made about news personalities and journalists refusing to wear the flag on lapel pins. The reasoning behind their refusal was that they didn't want to choose sides. Frankly, I'm glad that they chose not to wear the flag lapel pins if that is how they feel. It's far better NOT to display the flag than to desecrate it.

The United States has laws that govern the display of our flag. Those laws don't carry any penalties anymore because the courts consider violating them to be protected "speech". We've fallen a long way in such a brief time.
