Deluded DA quits case

Mike Nifong is calling it quites in the Duke Lacrosse "rape" case. It's about time. From the Associated Press:
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Facing ethics charges that could lead to his disbarment, the embattled district attorney in the Duke lacrosse sexual assault case asked the state attorney general Friday to appoint a special prosecutor to take over the case.
Noelle Talley, a spokeswoman for the attorney general, said District Attorney Mike Nifong made the request in a letter.
Nifong's attorney insisted the veteran prosecutor was not running from a weak case and said Nifong was disappointed he would not be able to take the matter to trial.
I think Mr. Nifong is delusional or lying. This case is so weak that it makes wet tissue paper look like Hulk Hogan. Mr. Nifong must must know this. Why else would he have deliberately suppressed the evidence that shows that none of the Duke players left any DNA behind, and that if there actually was a rape, it must have been committed by someone else?
"He feels, as a result of the accusations against him, that he would be a distraction, and he wants to make sure the accuser receives a fair trial," attorney David Freedman told The Associated Press. "He still believes in the case. He just believes his continued presence would hurt her."
He wants to make sure the accuser receives a fair trial. Well, she deserves a fair trial. I want to know when she's going to be charged with lying to investigators. Even Patrick Fitzgerald knows that's a crime. Just ask Scooter Libby.
We know she's lied to investigators. She's changed her story so many times she makes former President Clinton look like an honest man. What's next, the Dan Rather defense (it was a fake-but-accurate accusation)?
Nifong met with the accuser this week to tell her of his decision, Freedman said.
And here, I thought that I had read that he met with her to actually get his first interview with her since this case came to light.
Legal experts and observers have railed against Nifong in recent weeks, calling his case pitfully weak and casting doubt on his chance of winning. Even longtime colleagues have questioned his judgment and integrity.
I've been railing against him since last summer when details of this thing first started falling apart. I said it then, and I'll say it again, This case has the appearance of being politically motivated. Back in October when it was announced that the trial would be delayed until this spring, I wondered if it was to keep the case alive long enough to make it appear that Mr. Nifong was "tough" on interracial crime. I asked then if there was any coincidence that he was up for re-election.
I think it's clear by now that Mr. Nifong has exhibited horrible judgement from the get-go with this case. Waiting until just last week to interview the accuser is just the tip of the iceberg. The fact that he appears to have lied to the press about the existence of DNA evidence that might weaken his case is a perfect example of his lack of integrity.
"I think we're all delighted that we're going to have objective and competent prosecutors reviewing this case," said James P. Cooney III, an attorney for Seligmann. "We look forward to cooperating with those prosecutors fully and completely in bringing this prosecution to an end."
Now that we're "going to have objective and competent prosecutors reviewing this case" I wonder how long it will be before the remainder of the charges will be dropped. This has been a racially and politically motivated case from the beginning. It's long past time that it was over with.
Mr. Nifong has finally done the right thing in stepping down. It's just too bad that he couldn't take that final step in the right direction and drop the case entirely.
Al Sharpton lost a lot of money in the Tawana Brawley affair after he lost a lawsuit related to it. Tawana Brawley is still a fugitive from justice.
Justice would be served well if Mike Nifong and the lying woman in this case were to meet the same fate. Assuming they're guilty that is. Even they deserve a fair trial.

I did not know that.
If at all possible, Nifong should be brought up on criminal charges and also be civilly sued as well. And I do hope he is indeed brought up before the NC Bar and if found guilty by their stadards, disbarred. Plus if he is indeed found to have abused his office for personal gain and/or abused his power, I also hope he is removed from office and loses his pension. From what has been reported, Nifong seems to be a prime example of the stereotypical bad government official.
