Permalink Format Change

I'm about 70% finished with the implementation of the new URL rewriter. I decided to go with an open source URL rewriting library. So far it seems to be working well, but I did run into a few glitches along the way.

The new URL format for the permalinks will include the year, the month and the day, as well as the post ID. There shouldn't be a querystring involved. I haven't gotten everything switched over yet. I also haven't implemented "hackable" URLs yet. That's coming soon.

Most of the internal site links use the new permalink style. The feeds still use the old style permalinks. Embedded links in posts still use the old style. I'm not going to republish all of the old posts to change over the permalinks, but I will be updating the feeds.

The old style permalinks will still work even for the new posts, and that's not going to change. Anybody that has linked to a post using the old permalink style should find that their link is still good.

There may be a few glitches in the system right now, but I'm working on them as fast as I can. If you find problems with the URL rewriting, please post a comment or send me email at perri at perrinelson dot com and I'll try to get the problems fixed.

UPDATE: I've updated the feeds to use the new permalink format. I've also modified the processor for editing posts.


UPDATE 2: Permalinks are now partly hackable. If you strip off the last section of the URL, leaving a URL like this http://perrinelson.com/2006/12/31/ the URL will show you all posts for that day. The archive calendar has been updated to use this feature.

The archive calendar has been updated to use this feature. If you strip off all but the year, the URL will show you a list of months with posts that year. For example, http://perrinelson.com/2006.
