For those we lost, We will not forget 09/11/2001 “Our God given unalienable rights are given to us all as individuals. They tell us what me may do for ourselves, and they are the embodiment of liberty. The so-called rights that government gives to some of us are parcelled out to select groups as classes. They tell us what one class of people may require another to do for them, and they are the very essence of slavery.”

My Website

This blog has been around for a couple of months. The first post here was on October 13th (actually, that was the first post from my old blog that was transferred here. The "real" first post was on October 29th). That wasn't the first thing that happened here though. The website itself was up in the middle of August with the newsfeed section. Shortly after that I added the weather section, and a members area.

I purchased the domain name in August, but I've had a website at this IP address for several years now. Before I switched over to the current web site I was working on a motorsports website. If you go to http://nofemotorsports.com, it will take you to the home page of this website, at least it will as I write this. That may change soon.

The old website was intended to be a multi-team drag racing log site and racing information portal. I worked on it sporadically since I purchased the domain name nofemotorsports.com. Then in August I abandoned it and replaced the website with this one.

The primary reason I abandoned the website is because I dissolved my old racing team. I'm not going to go into the reasons why I did that. They're personal and painful. I do intend to race again, but I won't team up with other people when I do it.

When I do get back into racing, I'll race with a car that requires a lot less maintenance and preparation to race. I'll race a car that I can race on Saturdays and Sundays and drive to work the rest of the week. That was my original plan for the Corvette, but things ran away from me.

Anyway, I was introduced to blogging by a former coworker, Jen Kilmer. She keeps a blog at livejournal.com. I started my first blog on livejournal.com and basically did nothing but rant. I also didn't stick with it for long, because the experience using livejournal wasn't that satisfying for me. I write software for a living, and I wanted to write my own blogging software.

When I tore down the drag racing site and put up the news reader section of this one, I decided I would eventually support blogging here. On August 24th, I created a "whats new" feed and a simple editing interface to update it as I made changes to the site. That was when I decided I could implement a blog here.

At about the same time I was working on the changes, I started using Microsoft's "live spaces" and created a blog there, with the intention of migrating the posts there to this blog once I'd implemented the blogging software. For a while the main page of this site was a feed reader for that site's RSS feed. That was how I worked out the site layout.

Once I worked out an implementation for the Blogger, MetaWeblog and Movable Type API sets, I transferred all of the posts from that blog to this one using Windows Live Writer. Over time I've added additional features, including a built-in editing interface, comment support and trackbacks, as well as a bunch of other "standard" features like the archive calendar and sidebar.

There's more to come. This weekend I'm working on a URL re-writing engine for the site. This will end up changing the format of the permalinks to a "hackable" form. It's also going to allow me to support a few additional domain names, and to bring back the motorsports web site in a new incarnation.

Hopefully by the new year I'll have the new module in place. Once it's up and running I have a bunch of other new features for the website(s) planned. My son wants to start his own website where he'll provide gaming tips for some of his favorite games like Final Fantasy. Hopefully we'll be able to launch that site early in 2007, on the platform I've developed for this site.
